Alma Searching and Terminology

UVic Alma Record Numbers

All UVic Alma record numbers consist of a two-digit prefix that identifies the record type + the unique part of the record number + 7291 (UVic Institution Code)

  • MMS ID – Bibliographic (99)   (MMS ID = Metadata Management System ID)
    • Example: MMS ID: 995345593807291
  • Holdings ID – Holdings record (22)
    • Example: Holdings ID: 225701670007291
  • Item ID – Item record (23)
    • Example: Item ID: 2331553550007291
  • Collection ID – Electronic collection (61)
  • Service ID – Electronic service (62)
  • Portfolio ID – Electronic portfolio (53)

Institution Zone vs. Community Zone

  • House icon = Institution Zone
    • The institution zone holds only our records
  • Two people icon = Community Zone
    • The community zone is a shared repository of records that are maintained by Ex Libris. These records are available to all Alma users at all institutions. The community zone contains electronic titles, electronic collections, electronic portfolios, and the global authority records.

Searching Tips

  • Use an "All Titles" search if searching for a record with no inventory
  • An "All Titles" search searches all bib records, regardless of resource type
  • Material Type and Resource Type are determined based on the MARC coding of the bib record. For more information, see:
