Syndetics Unbound provides additional information to catalogue records such as book profiles, professional reviews, awards won, and information about the author. This additional information comes from publishers, LibraryThing, and publishing industry journals, and can help you to (among other things):
- Find related books, on a topic
- Find additional editions and formats
- Assess the book for quality, scholarly content, and usefulness
- situate the book in a series
The Syndetics enhancements are found at the bottom of each record, but note that not all catalogue records will contain this additional information, and not all information will be added to each book.
For example, let's look at Ghost Map by Stephen Johnson. The first thing you see is the table of contents for the additional information about this book:
Use this to navigate through the content, or simply scroll down! The Profile Informaton gives a sumamry of the book, with clickable terms that take you to other books with shared profile elements
Aughor information provides the author's biography and accomplishments, and shows additional books by that author.
Professional book reviews help you to assess the book and decide if it's useful. For scholarly reviews, use a scholarly, disciplinary article database.
Also look for our Librarian Lists - UVic Librarians and our colleagues around the world have created these lists on topics or themes to help you find additional useful information, to highlight the coolest stuff in our catalogues, and to group books used by specific courses.
