Indigenous Hub

Overview

British Columbia is a region of immense linguistic diversity, home to over 30 distinct Indigenous languages.  These languages are deeply connected to the land, culture, and history of the First Nations who speak them. They hold unique knowledge, traditions, and worldviews passed down through generations.  Due to the devastating impacts of colonization, including residential schools and systemic discrimination, many Indigenous languages in BC are critically endangered. Language revitalization is crucial.  Language is an inherent right and a vital aspect of self-determination. Revitalizing Indigenous languages supports Indigenous communities in reclaiming their sovereignty and cultural autonomy.
