Sixties Scoop

The "Sixties Scoop" refers to the period primarily from the 1950s through the 1980s, where Indigenous children were systematically removed from their families and communities by child welfare authorities. These children were then placed for adoption or in foster care with predominantly non-Indigenous families, often far from their cultural roots and communities, and sometimes even outside of Canada.  The Sixties Scoop is recognized as a part of Canada's history of cultural genocide against Indigenous peoples, following the residential school system, and it’s devastating effects continue to be felt by Indigenous communities today.
