The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports postsecondary-based research and training in the humanities and social sciences. By focusing on developing Talent, generating Insights and forging Connections across campuses and communities, SSHRC strategically supports world-leading initiatives that reflect a commitment to ensuring a better future for Canada and the world. SSHRC awards for faculty and postdoctoral researchers include:

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) aims to make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for the benefit of all Canadians. The agency supports university students in their advanced studies, promotes and supports discovery research, and fosters innovation by encouraging Canadian companies to participate and invest in postsecondary research projects. NSERC researchers are on the vanguard of science, building on Canada’s long tradition of scientific excellence. NSERC awards for faculty and postdoctoral researchers include:

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is the Government of Canada's health research investment agency. Its mission is to create new scientific knowledge and to enable its translation into improved health, more effective health services and products, and a strengthened Canadian health care system. Composed of 13 institutes, CIHR provides leadership and support to health researchers and trainees across Canada. CIHR awards for faculty and postdoctoral researchers include:

The Google Research Awards program aims to identify and support world-class, full-time faculty pursuing researching areas of mutual interest.

The Association of Canadian Archivists is a non-profit organization that represents the needs and interests of archives and records professionals throughout Canada.

  • ACA Fellows are celebrated and acknowledged for their long-standing service to the Association and the Canadian archival community.
  • The Larry Dohey Award honours members of the ACA whose work has raised public awareness of archives and recordkeeping, and to recognize, celebrate, and encourage outstanding examples of advocacy and outreach within the archives and records profession. 
  • The Membership Recognition Award honours members of the association who have made significant contributions to the ACA and to the archival profession.
  • The Honorary Archivist Award recognizes individuals whom the ACA wishes to honour for their contribution to the archival profession. 

The American Library Association (ALA) provides funding or material support for present or future activities. Grants may be offered to support the planning and implementation of programs, aid in the preparation of a dissertation or other publications, and to promote research in library and information sciences. Grants are also given to support travel to conferences, such as the ALA Annual Conference, or other events that can broaden an individual's experience or education in librarianship. There are many awards available through the American Library Association, including but not limited to the ones listed below. View the full list of awards.  

The Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) offers awards that promote innovation and excellence in research, teaching, and service for educators and scholars in Library and Information Science and cognate disciplines internationally through leadership, collaboration, advocacy, and dissemination of research.

The British Columbia Library Association (BCLA) leads the library community in advocacy, professional development, and support of intellectual freedom, ensuring that all British Columbians have equitable access to information, ideas, and works of the imagination.

  • Eureka Award: This award is given to an individual or organization that has created an innovative approach to address a barrier, solve a problem, provide a powerful new insight, or introduce an original idea in the library field.
  • Champion of Intellectual Freedom Award: This award is given to an individual or organization that demonstrates significant advancement of intellectual freedom in the public realm for the benefit of British Columbians.
  • Building Better Communities Award: This award is for an individual or organization responsible for increasing the relevancy and impact of library service through partnership, collaboration, and building trust where little had previously existed. 
  • BC Academic Libraries Section (BCALS) Outstanding Contribution Award: The BC Academic Librarians Section (ALS) Outstanding Contribution Award goes to an academic librarian, or team of same, whose outstanding contribution has made a real difference to students, faculty, or colleagues in British Columbia.
  • Young Adult and Children’s Services Section Award: The Young Adult and Children’s Services Section (YAACS) established the YAACS Award in 2012 to recognize exceptional service in the area of children’s or teen librarianship in British Columbia.
  • BC Cataloguing and Technical Services Interest Group (BCCATS) J. McRee Elrod Leadership Award: Previously called the BCCATS Technical Services Award, the BCCATS J. McRee Elrod Leadership Award recognizes an individual or unit working in technical services that has demonstrated excellence and/or made a difference to users and colleagues in British Columbia in the area of technical services.  

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) provides leadership on behalf of Canada’s research libraries and enhances capacity to advance research and higher education. It promotes effective and sustainable knowledge creation, dissemination, and preservation, and advocates for public policy that enables broad access to scholarly information.

  • Distinguished Service to Research Librarianship: Awarded annually to a Canadian individual who has served the profession with marked distinction and has made significant national and international contributions to research librarianship through their leadership and engagement. 
  • Award of Merit: Awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding local, regional, or national contribution within an area of research librarianship and whose contribution has had broad and beneficial impact within the CARL community. 

The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is an independent, nonprofit organization that forges strategies to enhance research, teaching, and learning environments in collaboration with libraries, cultural institutions, and communities of higher learning. Their awards and fellowships webpage offers many different funding opportunities for librarians and their institutions.

The Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries (COPPUL) leverages resources, expertise, and infrastructure across member libraries to support and enhance teaching, learning, student experience, and research on member campuses.

The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) offers a number of fellowships, funds, and grants to enable aspiring library and information professionals from all over the world to enhance their training and to provide funding for new and exciting projects in the field of librarianship.

The Pacific Rim Research Libraries Alliance (PRRLA) focuses on cooperative ventures among academic libraries located around the Pacific Rim to improve access to scholarly research materials.

  • The Karl Lo Award provides support to PRRLA librarians for professional development and research focused on Pacific Rim library collaboration and digital library issues.
