UVic Libraries Student Awards, Scholarships, Fellowships, and Contests

UVic Libraries is proud to be an essential and integral part of the research life cycle at UVic, and our student awards and fellowships recognize and honor the contributions and achievements of all our students.

David Harris Flaherty Undergraduate Student Library Scholarship

The David Harris Flaherty Undergraduate Student Library Scholarship was established in 2014 and named for donor David Harris Flaherty. It is awarded to an in-course, academically outstanding undergraduate student in any discipline and is worth $1000.

Winning students submit an essay demonstrating how they have utilized library resources—print, archival, music, multimedia, or digital—for a class project, assignment, or research paper.

Annual deadline: May 31

Eligibility: Returning UVic undergraduate students

William Petrie Graduate Student Library Scholarship

The William Petrie Graduate Student Library Scholarship was established in 2014 and named for bequest donor William Petrie. It is awarded to an academically outstanding graduate student in any discipline and is worth $1000.

Winning students submit an essay demonstrating how they have utilized library resources—print, archival, music, multimedia, or digital—for a class project, assignment, or research paper.

Annual deadline: May 31

Eligibility: Returning UVic graduate students, at the master's or doctoral level

Gladys Nipp & Stephen Mah Family Award

The Gladys Nipp & Stephen Mah Family Award was established in 2019 and named in honour of Gladys Nipp and Stephen Mah. Each year, it is given to one or more undergraduate or graduate UVic student(s) in any discipline and is worth $1000.

Winning students submit a proposal describing how they will use and/or enhance the UVic Libraries' Chinese-Canadian collections for the purposes of research, outreach initiatives (including both physical and/or digital exhibitions), or oral history projects. 

Annual deadline: May 31

Eligibility: UVic students, at either the undergraduate or graduate level

Peter and Ana Lowens University of Victoria Libraries Special Collections Student Fellowship

The Peter and Ana Lowens University of Victoria Libraries Special Collections Student Fellowship Program is open to UVic undergraduate and graduate students from any discipline. Student fellows undertake an independent research or creative project using rare and unique materials from UVic Libraries Special Collections and University Archives. Projects can include ongoing research or new areas of scholarship. Student fellows will be provided workshops grounding their research in archival theory, book history, and digital methods, as well as mentorship and support from library staff and faculty. Four students are selected each year. The program welcomes outward, public-facing projects, including exhibitions, podcasts, and lectures, as research outputs.

Eligibility: Restricted to UVic undergraduate and graduate students

To submit: Please submit a 500 word (maximum) proposal on a project you would undertake using materials from Special Collections and University Archives and how you would benefit from participating in the program. Submit the proposal to Heather Dean: hdean@uvic.ca.

Deadline: November 15

on the Verge Writing Contest

The on the Verge Writing Contest showcases and celebrates emerging UVic student voices with an annual theme under the broad rubric of equity, diversity, and human rights. As a reformulation of the Diversity Writing Contest, we carry forward the spirit of diversity under a broader umbrella and with a renewed spirit of creative exploration. The contest is co-sponsored by UVic Libraries and Equity and Human Rights (EQHR) with significant support from other units on campus.

Guidelines:

  • Open to UVic students only
  • Only one entry per student will be accepted
  • Graphic novel/comic formats will be accepted
  • Visual and graphic works are eligible
  • Submissions must be original and unpublished

Enter one of the four categories below:

  • Poetry (150 lines maximum)
  • Fiction (1500 words maximum)
  • Non-fiction (1500 words maximum)
  • Spoken word (3-minute maximum; video or audio file formats accepted)
