Open Science & Open Scholarship

Open Science is a global research reform movement and a set of scholarly practices that aims to make more research transparent and accessible

Challenges to Adoption

Institutional Policies

  • Absence of clear policies or guidelines supporting open science from university administration.

Cultural Barriers

  • The traditional academic culture has valued individual achievements and competition over collaboration.

Lack of Awards & Incentives

  • Traditional metrics prioritize publication in high-impact, closed-access journals and open  practices may not be adequately rewarded in tenure and promotion.

Lack of Infrastructure

  • Lack of infrastructure or resources for proper data management, sharing, and collaborative platforms for working collaboratively on across institutions and disciplines.

Concerns of Misuse

  • Researchers may worry that their work could be scooped or misinterpreted if it is openly accessible.

Time & Resourece Constraints

  • Implementing open science practices can require additional time and effort.
  • There can be limited funding or support for open science initiatives.
