Course Reserves Reading Lists

Course Reserves are course related materials identified by instructors. They can be accessed electronically or as physical items that can be borrowed from the Ask Us desk at UVic Libraries.

I'm having issues accessing a reading list

First, be sure that you're accessing the reading list through Brightspace.

If you're still unable to access the reading list, try these tips:

  • Try a different browser, e.g., Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. Safari is not recommended.
  • Ensure that your browser is accepting third party cookies. This is different in each browser, but generally,
    • Open your browser's settings.
    • Find the settings for cookies and site permissions.
    • Enable third-party cookies or unblock third-party cookies.

For further instructions for allowing third-party cookies follow this guide.

If you're still unable to access your course's reading list, let your instructor know.

I'm getting a blank screen

If you are getting a blank screen after you click on Course Reserves in Brightspace, try the following solution:

  1. Go to Start and click Settings
  2. Choose Time & language and select Date & time
  3. Enable Set time automatically
  4. Choose your time zone
  5. Click a button called Sync now if you see one. Otherwise, disabling and re-enabling Set time automatically will do the same thing.
  6. Clear your website data / cache then try accessing the reading list through Brightspace.

I'm getting an error message when I click on an item

If you get an error message when you click on an item in a reading list, try these tips:

  • Ensure that your browser is accepting third-party cookies. Follow this guide for further instructions.
  • If  you get a 400, 414, for 431 error, try clearing your browser's cache. Follow this guide for further instructions.

I'm getting the message “This eBook is in use”

Some library resources (usually eBooks) allow access to a limited number of users at the same time.

If you try to access one of these resources when the maximum number of concurrent users is reached, you'll get an error message that looks like this:

Error message saying: Sorry this eBook is in use. Please try again later.

If this happens, try accessing it again later.

To see whether an item on a reading list has limited user access, click View online and look for a note about concurrent users or limited user access.

Concurrent user message example saying "Limited user access (2 copies available)"

Where can I find books and other physical items on Print Reserves?

Print books and other physical items on reading lists are placed on special shelves, making them easier to find.

  • In the McPherson library, the Course Reserves shelf is just behind the Ask Us desk on the first floor.
  • In the Priestly law library, the Reserves Room is right beside the loan desk on the first floor.

The items are arranged by call number, just like on other shelves. To borrow one of these items, just take it to the desk. Most items can be borrowed for 2 hours, 1 day, or 3 days.

Watch this video to find out where the Course Reserves shelf is in the McPherson library, how to find what you're looking for, and what the different coloured stickers mean!

I still need help

Course Reserves staff can offer demos of the Course Reserves platform.

You can email your question or concern to reserves@uvic.ca.

You can also send a message to the Course Reserves team from your reading list:

  1. Click Discuss with library in the menu on the right.
  2. Write your message. Click Send.
  3. The Notification bell at the top right of the reading list will show that the Course Reserves team has responded, and you'll receive a notification by email.
  4. Click the Notification bell to view the response.
