Course Reserves Reading Lists

Course Reserves are course related materials identified by instructors. They can be accessed electronically or as physical items that can be borrowed from the Ask Us desk at UVic Libraries.

About Course Reserves

The UVic Libraries Course Reserves online platform is an interactive, student facing reading lists system that allows instructors to build reading lists for students and manage, edit, and update them in one place.

Reading lists include learning materials that have been made available by your course instructor. They may include books, articles, websites, videos and more. Furthermore, we have integrated Course Reserves with Brightspace. The poster highlights the benefits of using the Course Reserves platform.

Publishing workflow

These five steps must be completed to successfully publish your reading list:

  1. Make a reading list. You can create a list from scratch, roll over a list from a previous term, or ask the library to create a list from your syllabus.
  2. Add items to your list (e.g., articles, eBooks, websites, etc.).
  3. Edit the list. You can add, edit, or delete items from your reading list at any time.
  4. Publish the list to make it available to students. The library will review items that need copyright clearance.
  5. Share the list with students via Brightspace > Course Tools > Course Reserves or via a link.

Need help?

Please connect with the Course Reserves staff to use the online platform or send questions and comments about the service. We put together a tip sheet to address access to the reading list.

You can also use email to connect with Inba Kehoe for support on using the software in the form of demos and consultations.

Fair Dealing Guidelines

All items submitted to Course Reserves must comply with UVic's Fair Dealing Guidelines.

You can add links to titles in the library collection or from a website. You can scanned content from a book but not more than 10%. We do not add print or digital coursepacks or publishers' complimentary on Course Reseres

Clearing copyright

Resources added through the search function on the online platform are copyright cleared and available immediately. All other resources have to be cleared by the Course Reserves staff. This process may take 2-3 days. Once the staff have cleared an item, it will be available from the reading list.
