There are three ways you can "filter" the data that is being displayed in the report
Slicers are set by the report creator and can take different forms. The following is a table of slicers types and example images.

The filters pane is something the report creator can choose to show or hide, therefore, it won't appear in every report. The report creator does not have any stylistic control over.
The filters pane has sections for 3 types of filters. Filter that affect the
You can see in the filters pane the 3 sections 1. filters on this visual: this only appears IF a visual is selected. By default, the options for variables to filter will be the one's in the visual, but the report creator can add others. In this example the variables are Average of random number and Day of the week, which make up the pie chart and are available to filter on the selected visual only. 2. Filter on this page: In this example, the Date variable is available to filter for all visualizations on this page. 3. Filters on all pages: In this example, the Random number variable is available to filter for all visualizations on all pages. |
The filters pane appears the the right of the report and is expandable and collapsible.

The options for the filters in the filter pane depend on the data type - numeric, qualitative, or date and time.
For qualitative values you can do
Basic filtering is the same as a drop down or vertical slicer in which you may check off boxes to select values. Top N keeps the top categories based on another (qualitative / numeric) value.
Advanced filtering has a similar format to numeric filter:
Date and time also have advanced and basic filtering, but they also have relative date and relative time. These have the same options as the relative date and time slicers.
As a reminder, a "mark" in a visualization is the visual element used to represent a category; for example, a slice in a pie chart, a point on a line chart, a bar in a bar chart. When you select a mark, which represents a category, other visualizations will be filtered to that category (this can be turned off by the report creator). To unselect, click on the mark again.
For example, In a pie chart where the different coloured slices represent days of the week, If click on the pink slice, which represents Friday, the other visualizations will only show data from Fridays.
