Filters

There are three ways you can "filter" the data that is being displayed in the report

  1. Slicers
  2. Filters pane
  3. Filter by selecting a mark in a visual

1. Slicers

Slicers are set by the report creator and can take different forms. The following is a table of slicers types and example images.

Image of Slicer Description of Slicer
Vertical list with nesting

Vertical list slicer: all options are shown unless the list is too long in which case there will be a scroll bar. The options can be nested; in the example, each month has 7 days of the week nested under it. Click on the arrows to see nested options. To select more than one at a time:

  • Mac: hold CMD and select
  • Windows: hold CTRL and select
dropdown list with nested options Drop down list: drop down list requires clicking on the box to see all the options (may also have a scroll bar). The options can be nested; in the example, each month has 7 days of the week nested under it. Click on the arrows to see nested options.

To select more than one at a time:

  • Mac: hold CMD and select
  • Windows: hold CTRL and select
tile slicers Tile slicer: option is selected when it is black. When none are black then they are all selected. These slicers look similar to buttons.

Between slicer:

1. this is available for numeric, time, and date types. Notice how the circle appears on both ends of the slider. You may drag those to change the start and end value of the range. The start and end values are not filtered out (inclusive). You can also type in a value in the boxes above the slider.

2. For date types only, you can click on the calendar icon to browse through and select a date from the calendar.

Before slicer Before slicer: this is available for numeric, time, and date types. Notice how the circle appears only on the far right end of the slider. You may drag it to change the end value of the range. The end value is not filtered out (inclusive). You can also type in a value in the box above the slider. For date types only, you can click on the calendar icon to browse through and select a date from the calendar.
after slider slicer After slicer: this is available for numeric, time, and date types. Notice how the circle appears only on the far left end of the slider. You may drag it to change the start value of the range. The start value is not filtered out (inclusive). You can also type in a value in the box above the slider. For date types only, you can click on the calendar icon to browse through and select a date from the calendar.

relative date slicer

Relative Date: this is available for date types in which you may look at a date range based on the current date. This is the structure of the slicer

2. Filters Pane

The filters pane is something the report creator can choose to show or hide, therefore, it won't appear in every report. The report creator does not have any stylistic control over.

The filters pane has sections for 3 types of filters. Filter that affect the

  1. selected visualization
  2. current report page you are on
  3. entire report
filters pane with selected visual (pie chart)

You can see in the filters pane the 3 sections

1. filters on this visual: this only appears IF a visual is selected. By default, the options for variables to filter will be the one's in the visual, but the report creator can add others. In this example the variables are Average of random number and Day of the week, which make up the pie chart and are available to filter on the selected visual only.

2. Filter on this page: In this example, the Date variable is available to filter for all visualizations on this page.

3. Filters on all pages: In this example, the Random number variable is available to filter for all visualizations on all pages.

The filters pane appears the the right of the report and is expandable and collapsible.

Filter types

The options for the filters in the filter pane depend on the data type - numeric, qualitative, or date and time.

Numeric

  1.  Choose a filter type from the drop-down menu. Options are
    • is less than
    • is less than or equal to
    • is greater than
    • is greater than or equal to
    • is
    • is not
    • is blank
    • is not blank
  2. input a variable to compare against
  3. You may repeat steps 1 and 2 for more rules using the AND or OR operand

Qualitative

For qualitative values you can do

  • basic filtering
  • advanced filtering
  • top N

Basic filtering is the same as a drop down or vertical slicer in which you may check off boxes to select values. Top N keeps the top categories based on another (qualitative / numeric) value.

Advanced filtering has a similar format to numeric filter:

  1.  Choose a filter type from the drop-down menu. Options are
    • contains
    • does not contain
    • starts with
    • does not start with
    • is
    • is not
    • is blank
    • is not blank
    • is empty
    • is not empty
  2. input a variable to compare against
  3. You may repeat steps 1 and 2 for more rules using the AND or OR operand

Date and Time

Date and time also have advanced and basic filtering, but they also have relative date and relative time. These have the same options as the relative date and time slicers.

3. Filter by Selecting a Mark on a Visual

As a reminder, a "mark" in a visualization is the visual element used to represent a category; for example, a slice in a pie chart, a point on a line chart, a bar in a bar chart. When you select a mark, which represents a category, other visualizations will be filtered to that category (this can be turned off by the report creator). To unselect, click on the mark again.

For example, In a pie chart where the different coloured slices represent days of the week, If click on the pink slice, which represents Friday, the other visualizations will only show data from Fridays.
