Grey Literature

What it is, its value, where to search for it, and how to evaluate it.

What are conference proceedings?

The documented record of research communications shared at a specific conference.

  • May also be referred to as symposium, meeting, seminar, caucus, convention, congress, forum, workshop, etc.
  • Outputs are usually brief and may be available as papers, posters, or abstracts only.
  • Typically not peer-reviewed

Why include them in your search?

  • Provide information on emerging research areas and research in progress
  • May help reduce publication bias as proceedings of negative results may never be formally published -- 50% of conference presentations never become articles.

Search strategies

  • Identify relevant conferences related to your topic and scan the websites/programs.
  • Many bibliographic databases (Web of Science, ERIC, IEEE Xplore, etc.) will include select conference proceedings, you can find these using the document type filter. For help selecting appropriate databases contact your subject librarian.
