Search Methodology for Evidence Syntheses

  1. Formulate a clear, well-defined research question of appropriate scope
    1. consider using a framework like PICO to define your question scope
    2. define inclusion & exclusion criteria
  2. Consider alternative ways of describing your describing the key concepts in your question
  3.  Design & implement complex, comprehensive search strategies to maximize retrieval of relevant studies
  4. Search relevant databases
  5. Find existing systematic (evidence syntheses) papers on your topic and peruse the methodology sections of the papers to inform your own search methodology
  6. Search for grey literature
  7. Keep a research log and use citation management tool
