A.I. for UVic Librarians -- Internal

Learning and Teaching Support and Innovation (LTSI)

LTSI have developed guidance covering the use of ChatGPT and similar Generative A.I. tools in studying and teaching. We recommend these resources as an important contribution to advocating A.I. literacy on UVic campus and beyond. They will be updated regularly.

Artificial Intelligence Evaluation and Assessment in Post Secondary

After conducting an extensive literature review on GenAI tools and their use in higher education, comprehensive environmental scan of universities' websites, policies, and guidelines , as well as in-depth consultations with students, faculty/librarians, and campus stakeholders between March and June, 2023, an LTSI-led AI working group has produced a report and several recommendations for UVic's own stance on the subject, released on Dec 4, 2023.

Update Dec. 5, 2023: Please note that the guidlines beneath might be replaced by the recent report and UVic guidelines)

Guidelines for students
LTSI's comprehensive overview The Use Of Artificial Intelligence Tools Such As ChatGPT In The Classroom, which is aimed at students, not only provides an introduction to the topic, including technical basics on how these applications work, it also covers a variety of relevant aspects that should be considered by students in the context of using A.I. for their assignments, with a focus on academic integrity.

For instructors

The use of artificial intelligence tools and implications for Academic Integrity is the LTSI resource, which provides insights and support around the use of AI tools in teaching environments, covers a range of aspects that might be relevant to educators who wish to consider the possible use of A.I. applications in their teaching, as well as how to engage with students who may be using such tools. It offers a number of approaches and suggestions, such as a blueprint for a discussion around academic integrity (including materials for adaptation), or ideas and examples for a constructive use of generative AI applications as learning vehicles.
