Prompt Design For Beginners

• This module introduces you to the concept of assigning ChatGPT a specific model persona or character in order to override its default identity as a friendly, professional sounding assistant. 

• Crafting a specific persona for the model provides a clear direction and tone for its responses. ChatGPT will provide contextually relevant replies that are in-character.

  • Responses can incorporate the use of specialized knowledge, express emotions, utilize a specific communication style, etc. This approach creates a more fun and engaging experience for the user.

  • When you assign a persona to ChatGPT, the model adopts this identity for the entire conversation; creating an immersive experience for the user with the character they've developed.

The default personality for ChatGPT is to act as a friendly and helpful assistant that responds using a professional tone. However, you can tell ChatGPT to adopt a new persona which will influence the tone and perspective used in the model's response to your prompt. ChatGPT can assume the identity of any character you can imagine: a cynical detective, an art historian curating a new exhibit at the Neue Gallerie, an exhausted emergency room physician, a grade four science teacher, etc.

• When you assign a model persona to ChatGPT, it adopts this identity for the entire conversation.
  • The character's context lasts until the end of the conversation or until a new model persona is assigned.

Minimum Guidelines for Assigning a Model Persona to ChatGPT

1. The first line of your prompt should define the specific persona or role that the model should take on.
   • Act as an American astronaut ...
   • You are an American astronaut ...
      
2. Provide a context for the persona. 
   • ​What is the specific environment or situation that the character exists in?
   • For this module, an astronaut persona is on the first week of a mission to the International Space Station.

In my prompt, ChatGPT will role-play the character of an astronaut and I'll ask my input question:

In Step 3, I take the base persona of an astronaut on the International Space Station and gift the character with a ridiculously melodramatic backstory. The input question from Step 2 remains the same. 

When crafting a persona, think about the specific aspects that are important for influencing the model's response to your question.

Here are some questions to prompt your creativity (Butler, 2023):

• Does the persona have specific characteristics such as a style of speech or world view?
• Does the character possess a skill, subject knowledge, or technical expertise?
• Are there defining background experiences?
• What is the persona's behaviour motivated or driven by?
• What is the character's emotional state?
• How does the persona interact with others?

For this example, I dig into the astronaut's emotional state, personal challenges that influence the persona's perspective, and provide insight into what motivates the character's actions.

• As Dan Martin in the 2023 Medium article states (referenced in Step 2), "the more layers of emotional complexity you add to the character, the better responses you get". You need to provide quite a bit of descriptive detail to push the model to respond in a manner that significantly differs from how the default persona of a friendly, professional assistant would reply. 
   
• Notice how the model's response to the input question is tinged with sadness and expresses the personal sacrifices required by an astronaut.

In Step 4, the model's reply to the same input question uses a long-winded (or wordy) technical communication style to highlight the significance of the astronaut's engineering skills.
