Introduction to Mendeley

Outline or Agenda

Are you looking to make the management of your citations easy and seamless in your research process?  In this introduction to Mendeley workshop, you will learn how to import and organize your research sources, create bibliographies in the style of your choice, insert citations in your assignments, and more.

Please note: This workshop requires the installation of software, so please bring your own device.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to collect and organize citations from a variety of sources and generate a bibliography in their preferred citation style.

Pre-class videos, readings and exercises

Workshop participants are encouraged to download the following items from the Mendeley downloads page in advance of the workshop:

  1. Mendeley desktop
  2. Web importer browser extension
  3. Citation plugin for Microsoft Word

*In order to use Mendeley you need to create an account, but be aware that this means your data will be hosted on U.S. servers.

In class activities and instruction

Participants will work through:

  1. Downloading the Mendeley software, web connector, and Microsoft Word Plug-in;
  2. Searching for and importing research sources via Summon (or other databases on request);
  3. Organizing their research sources into folders;
  4. Creating a bibliography in the style of your choice; and
  5. Integrating citations into MS Word as part of the paper writing process.
