Providing Context

To situate your subject in their time and place, use a vareity of local history resources:

  • Local newspapers (historic/archival newspapers)
  • Census data (aggregate) or census information (individual entries, if old enough)
  • Local maps (fire insurance maps, city maps, transit map etc)
  • City directories (later known as phone books)
  • Photographs
  • Cemetery directories

Where you find these things depends on the province or city that your subject inhabited. They exist for every location in Canada. Ask a librarian for help once you have selected your person. You may find your subject in these sources, or you can image their life in the communities described by them.
