Plan Your Assignment

This is a self-paced research guide to planning your research assignment.

Brainstorming your ideas

Students brainstorm research assignment ideas in the library.Once you've read and understood your assignment, the next step is to brainstorm some research topics.  When you first start thinking about what you might research, try to stay open-minded.  Generating many possible topics is a good way to help you ultimately settle on a good one.

For instance, did you know that sketching a mindmap can be a great way to help you brainstorm ideas at the start of a research project?

Take a few minutes to review our brainstorming tutorials before starting your next assignment.

Narrowing your topic

After you brainstorm, you may need to make sure your topic is balanced and feasible by narrowing it down.  Narrowing your topic before you start researching will help save you time and relieve stress.

For instance, did you know that you should be able to state a balanced and feasible research topic in the form of a question?

Take a few minutes for this online tutorial before you start your next research assignment.
