Assessing an article

How to assess an article to determine if you should include it in your literature review?  There are many ways to assess an article, use these in combination with your priorities to decide if an article is suitable.  None of these are absolute, objective standards - think of them relative to your context - do they meet your needs? 

An easy to remember framework for starting your assessments is the CRAAP test: 

The CRAAP test: assess the currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose.

This mnemonic device reminds us to review the Currency, Relevancy, Authority, Accuracy and purpose of an article.  However it's been heavily criticized for not going far enough in assessing an article, and for relying on the article itself, rather than exploring the article in context.  It does not compare an article against similar articles, for example, and it does not look at the research methodologies, sample methods and sizes, and many other factors I that are important to assessing scholarly sources.
