Citation management at UVic: Managing your references

Citation management software tools guide

What is Zotero?

Zotero (zoh-TAIR-oh) is an open-source research tool and citation manager (Linux, Mac,& PC).

With Zotero, you can:

  • Create, store and manage research sources like PDFs, webpages, and citations
  • Automatically create and format bibliographies, in-text citations and footnotes directly in Word or OpenOffice
  • Add notes, tags, and annotations to your research sources
  • And much more!

Zotero software can be installed onto your computer's hard drive. You can also download a browser extension so you can capture sources from online databases, catalogs, Google, and more directly from your browser. Please see our detailed Guide to Installing Zotero for instructions on how to download, or come to one of our workshops!

You can also create a account and use the cloud to synchronize your data across multiple devices, but be aware that this means your data will be hosted on U.S. servers.
