This guides provide an introduction and overview of alternative metrics and how to use the tool Altmetric Explorer.

Understanding metrics

Altmetrics are just one form of research metrics. Other common indicators include:

  • Publication-based or citation based
  • Usage-based
  • Economic-based (research funding & grants)
  • Collaborations or network-based
  • Research awards, prizes, or other academic recognition

Responsible use

There is increasing recognition worldwide of the importance of responsible use of research impact indicators. A number of accepted frameworks on responsible use have emerged including:

DORA

  • The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) recognizes the need to improve the ways in which the outputs of scholarly research are evaluated.
