Teaching to Impact: A Toolkit for Embedding Wikipedia Editing in Asian Studies Curriculum

This toolkit provides practical guidelines on embedding Wikipedia editing in Asian Studies curriculum .

Course Context

PAAS 302 is a required course for Pacific and Asian Studies majors. The upper-level core course introduces key theoretical formulations in recent debates about the politics of world literature as they apply (or do not apply) to the context of Asian literature and culture. Reading a selection of contemporary Asian works in English translation, we examine various critical approaches in comparative literary, media, and cultural studies to issues such as world literary systems, pop culture, sinophone literature, translation, globalization, literary prizes, and cultural identity. The course focuses on changes in and circulation of media practices, and emphasizes the importance of digital literacy skills. See the course syllabus as Appendix 1.

In designing the course outline, the instructor should clearly explain the key themes and readings in the course to the TA and librarian, so that they can work together to determine how best to incorporate themes and readings with tasks related to the Wikipedia editing assignment, such as creating weekly discussion forum questions that can integrate material from course readings with digital literacy-related topics that draw from Wikipedia editing practices. This preparation also prepares the instructor, librarian, and TA to better guide student groups in the topic selection process.
