SENG 401 - Introduction to Legal Research for Software Engineering

This guide provides an introduction to legal research for non-lawyers

About this Guide

This guide was created to support SENG 401 (Social and Professional Issues) course.  It is also a useful starting point for understanding the basics of Canadian legal research.

Click on any of the tabs to find books, articles, and primary sources (legislation and cases) on Canadian law.

Legal Research Starting Points

The first step of legal research is starting with secondary sources. Secondary sources:

  • Comment on and explain the law
  • Clarify and define legal issues
  • Help identify relevant legislation and case law

Legal dictionaries, legal encyclopedias, textbooks, annotated statutes, law journal articles, and blogs are all examples of secondary materials.
