Literature searching with Artificial Intelligence

About this workshop

In this workshop, participants will explore the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist with literature searching as part of literature reviews for their assignments and consider ethical considerations such as plagiarism, privacy, and research integrity.

Participants will gain a basic understanding of some key AI-powered literature searching tools as well as the ethical implications of their use in research. In the hands-on portions of the workshop, participants will explore AI literature searching and retrieval tools and consider how to evaluate outputs for accuracy and biases.

Learning objectives:

By the end of the workshop, you will:

  • Learn how to use AI tools effectively for literature searching
  • Identify specific use cases for a range of AI tools for literature searching and across the literature review process
  • Critically evaluate the outputs of AI tools, including assessing accuracy, relevance, and potential biases
  • Identify ethical considerations and limitations of using AI tools for literature reviews

Policies & guidelines

Always be aware of UVic generative AI guidelines and policies.

Due to privacy and safety concerns, personal data and private research data must never be uploaded into any AI. UVic also restricts the use of DeepSeek on the UVic network and for UVic-owned devices.
