Data Citation and Attribution

Data citation refers to the practice of providing a reference to a data source used in developing a published work, in much the same way that bibliographic information is cited. Receiving acknowledge for sharing data is an important benefit for researchers, allowing the reuse of their work and its impact to be tracked.

Best practices for data citation standards are still evolving, however many databases and publishers provide their own style manuals to follow. Elements commonly requested include:

  • Author Name(s)
  • Year
  • Dataset Title
  • Global Persistent Identifier (e.g. a DOI)
  • Repository or Archive Name (where the data is published)
  • Version
