There are many online Science education websites and many are game-based. Most have quite a bit of free content and many require that you sign up for an account, even to get free content. The ones below are some of the resources I hear the most about from teachers and parents, and there are many more listed on We Are Teachers' website.
- The Ye’yumnuts Project is an excellent educational and cultural collaboration between the Cowichan Nation, School District 79 (Cowichan Valley), and UVic's Department of Anthropology. Delve into the many wonderful resources within this project website to learn more about traditional knowledge and perspectives. Their curriculum pages relate directly to BC's science, language arts, math, social studies, and French curriculum.
- Ocean Networks Canada has great content for a variety of learners on their Learning At Home pages. You're sure to learn a lot about hydrothermal vents, biodiversity in the deep sea, and play their fish ID challenge game. Explore these great resources and strengthen your Ocean Literacy!
- CBC Kids' Explore pages are amazing! You can search by many topics and age levels
- The Khan Academy has lots of excellent free content and I like how they have organized their content by grade level and math topic. Most topics also include short video lessons that can be watched before attempting each exercise.
- The Western Canadian Learning Network is a consortia of school districts from BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Their YouTube channel has some great content on a variety of curricular topics.
- National Geographic has lots of Science for kids
- Smithsonian Science Education Centre has sorted its extensive content by grade level and topic
- NASA's Kids' Club has loads of science- and engineering-based games and videos
- American Museum of Natural History's Explore offers access to virtual field trips as well as learning materials for parents
- Junior Achievement of BC (JABC) has come great content on their Online Learning pages focusing on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness. Check out their resources for elementary and middle school learners such as 'More Than Money' and 'Dollars With Sense.'
- Dealhack Canada's Guide to Free Online Resources During the COVID-19 Pandemic is a compilation of online courses, software, academic journals, and apps that you can access for free during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- “How to Identify Effective STEM Activities for Children” is an article by Baylor University’s School of Education online EdD Program which examples well how to integrate STEM into children's learning.
