There are many online language arts education websites and many are game-based. Most have quite a bit of free content and many require that you sign up for an account, even to get free content. The ones below are some of the resources I hear the most about from teachers and parents, and there are many more listed on We Are Teachers' website.
- Epic Books--Think Netflix for kids' books. Instantly access 40,000 of the best books, learning videos, quizzes & more. Some content is available for free during the COVID pandemic.
- Story Studio--The Story Studio Writing Society began in 2011 with the hope of bringing creativity and confidence into children’s lives by giving them the tools to tell stories of their own, in their own words and with their own illustrations.
- Oxford Owl--Learning at Home has lots of great content divided into topics such as:
- The Khan Academy has lots of excellent free content and I like how they have organized their content by grade level and topic. Most topics also include short video lessons that can be watched before attempting each exercise.
- IXL English language arts is another online resource that provides many practice opportunities. Also, this resource has the option to see how their language arts activities align to BC's curriculum by grade level
- Spellodrome is part of Mathletics has a free trial, but most of the content is fee-based. This resource goes into quite a bit of detail for each subtopic.
- Orca Books, a leading, local children's book publisher, has developed some great online resources of their content for use during the pandemic.
- The Western Canadian Learning Network is a consortia of school districts from BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Their YouTube channel has some great content on a variety of curricular topics.
- Junior Achievement of BC (JABC) has come great content on their Online Learning pages focusing on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness. Check out their resources for elementary and middle school learners such as 'More Than Money' and 'Dollars With Sense.'
- Dealhack Canada's Guide to Free Online Resources During the COVID-19 Pandemic is a compilation of online courses, software, academic journals, and apps that you can access for free during the COVID-19 pandemic.
