There are many online language arts education websites and many are game-based. Most have quite a bit of free content and many require that you sign up for an account, even to get free content. The ones below are some of the resources I hear the most about from teachers and parents, and there are many more listed on We Are Teachers' website.
- The Khan Academy has lots of excellent free content and I like how they have organized their content by grade level and topic. Most topics also include short video lessons that can be watched before attempting each exercise.
- IXL English language arts is another online resource that provides many practice opportunities. Also, this resource has the option to see how their language arts activities align to BC's curriculum by grade level
- Story Studio--The Story Studio Writing Society began in 2011 with the hope of bringing creativity and confidence into children’s lives by giving them the tools to tell stories of their own, in their own words and with their own illustrations.
- Spellodrome is part of Mathletics has a free trial, but most of the content is fee-based. This resource goes into quite a bit of detail for each subtopic.
- Oxford Owl--Learning at Home has lots of great content divided into topics such as:
- The Western Canadian Learning Network is a consortia of school districts from BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Their YouTube channel has some great content on a variety of curricular topics.
- The BBC's Learning English website is also filled with language arts exercises relevant to both native-English speakers and English Language learners.
- Orca Books, a leading, local youth adult and children's book publisher, has developed some great online resources of their content for use during the pandemic.
- The Ye’yumnuts Project is an excellent educational and cultural collaboration between the Cowichan Nation, School District 79 (Cowichan Valley), and UVic's Department of Anthropology. Delve into the many wonderful resources within this project website to learn more about traditional knowledge and perspectives. Their curriculum pages relate directly to BC's science, language arts, math, social studies, and French curriculum.
- Junior Achievement of BC (JABC) has come great content on their Online Learning pages focusing on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness. Check out their resources for middle school and secondary school learners such as 'More Than Money' and 'Dollars With Sense.'
- Dealhack Canada's Guide to Free Online Resources During the COVID-19 Pandemic is a compilation of online courses, software, academic journals, and apps that you can access for free during the COVID-19 pandemic.
