Anthropology How-to: Academic Posters

Advice on how to create an effective academic poster.

Printing and practical considerations

Drafts can be printed at UVic Libraries' DSC (third Floor Mearns McPherson Library)  for a flat rate of $5.  Email posters to the DSC and pay upon pickup.

Drafts or final versions can be printed at Blink or Zap!Copy. Pricing depends on your paper choice and the overall size, and is likely to cost around $15-$20 (2025 prices).

A matte, lightly textured paper is usually best. Your printer can recommend the best paper for your design and content.

A poster tube is a great tool to carry your poster safety, to avoid wrinkles and frayed edges.  If you're travelling to a conference, bring a digital copy with you (for safety), and you can print it on site at any local print shop or most business supply stores if necessary.   Some people opt to mail it ahead (consult with your conference for details or send it to your hotel, usually addressing it to the You (guest), c/o the hotel).  Also check with your airline because poster tubes usually are too large to be carry-on or personal items.
