The Book Arts Space supports letterpress printing, bookbinding, papermaking, and related activities related to historical and contemporary book arts. The following guide provides an overview of workshops available in the Book Arts Space.

Letterpress Printing: Creative Expression and Artistic Exploration

Description

This expanded workshop provides ample time for hands-on exploration, creative collaboration, and in-depth learning experiences tailored to artists and art educators interested in letterpress printing and artistic expression. Adjustments can be made based on the specific needs and skill levels of the participants.

Learning Outcomes

  • Advanced Typesetting Skills: Students will deepen their understanding of typesetting techniques, including collaborative block typesetting and design considerations for large-scale projects like posters.
  • Creative Collaboration: Through group work and collaborative poster building, students will explore teamwork, communication, and collective artistic expression.
  • Advanced Press Operation: Students will gain hands-on experience operating a Vandercook proof press, focusing on safety, registration, inking, printing, and cleanup procedures.
  • Artistic Exploration: The workshop encourages individual creative expression through the choice of words/images for typesetting and design elements for the collaborative poster.
  • Critical Analysis: Through reflection and discussion, students will analyze their work, receive feedback, and engage in dialogue about letterpress techniques and artistic concepts.
