Workshop - Introduction to Zotero

This page relates to the Introduction to Zotero workshop

Zotero is citation manager that allows you to manage research. It collects and organizes different kinds of sources including scholarly articles, websites, and PDFs. It is an open source tool and available online or for download at https://www.zotero.org/.

It includes plugins to automatically import citations from the web and library resources, and it will automatically build your bibliography for you in the citation style of your choice (APA, MLA, Chicago, IEEE, and more). 

Intended Audiences

This workshop is for:

  • Graduate Students
  • Undergraduate Students
  • UVic Staff

This workshop is for a general audience; no previous knowledge of the tool is required. It is applicable to those working with or managing research, including scholarly articles, websites, PDFs, and more.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, students will be able to:

  • Participants will be able to do the following by the end of this workshop:

  • Download & install Zotero

  • Use the Browser Connecter to capture research from the web

  • Use the Word add-in for citation & bibliography creation

  • Import/add citations to Zotero in a variety of ways

  • Cite sources and create bibliographies in Word & Google Docs

  • Attach Notes to citations in Zotero

These activities have been updated to reflect the new Zotero 7 navigation and interface.

Activity 1 - *** Downloading and installing Zotero, the Browser Connector, and the Word Add-in 

Activity 2 - Adding Citations to Zotero

Activity 3 - Adding Citations & Bibliographies in Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice

Activity 4 - Attaching PDFs and other files to your citations


***  Alternative option - Zotero Web Account Guided Activity: if you are using a public computer or do not want to download Zotero to your device, you can follow this guided activity to create a web account with Zotero, add 3 sources to your library, and have the option of creating a shared group.
