What are Standards?

Standards are a set of technical definitions and guidelines, basically "how to" instructions for designers, manufacturers and users. They promote safety, reliability, productivity, and efficiency in almost every industry that relies on engineering components or equipment. Standards are produced by scientific and professional organizations, trade organizations, and governments, nationally and internationally.

British Columbia building code 2012
"The 2012 British Columbia Building and Plumbing Code (BCBC) is an objective-based code which identifies the minimum standard within the Province of British Columbia for buildings to which this Code applies. Building, Plumbing and Fire Codes (collectively referred to as the 2012 BC Codes) are regularly updated and this edition of the BC Codes succeeds the 2006 edition"--Pref.

National Building Code of Canada (electronic)
The National Building Code of Canada 2015, together with the National Plumbing Code of Canada 2015, the National Fire Code of Canada 2015 and the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings 2015, is an objective-based National Model Code that can be adopted by provincial and territorial governments. Codes Canada(1) are developed by the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC). Canadian Standards Organizations

Bureau de Normalisation du Québec
The Bureau de normalisation du Québec is accredited by the SCC as a standards development body. As such, it is authorized to develop consensual normative documents (Standards) up to the national level and to participate in regional and international standardization activities. Documents are available in both French and English.
Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB)
The CGSB is one of the largest standards development and conformity assessment organizations in Canada. CGSB is a charter participant in the National Standards System (NSS) of Canada and a component of the Government of Canada, Department of Public Works and Government Services.
Canadian Standards Association (CSA)
The Canadian Standards Association is a not-for-profit membership-based association serving business, industry, government and consumers in Canada and the global marketplace
Standards Council of Canada (SCC)
The Standards Council of Canada is a federal Crown corporation. It has its mandate to promote efficient and effective standardization in Canada. SCC oversees Canada's National Standards System.
Underwriters Laboratory of Canada (ULC)
ULC is a key architect of the Canadian National Safety System; they have tested products for public safety for 90 years and are accredited by the SCC.

American and International Standards

IEEE Xplore Digital Library
Online delivery system providing full text access to the world's highest quality technical literature in electrical engineering, computer science, and electronics.

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
Search the ASTM site to identify specific standards, then search the UVic Library catalogue to determine if they are available in the collection. If not, contact the Library Help Desk.
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Standards
Produces standards related to piping, fittings, cranes, elevators, screw threads, and other areas of interest to ASME.
ASSIST: the Department of Defense Military Specifications, Standards and Related Publications
ASTM Standards and Digital Library
A collection of standards and technical engineering information. The Library covers a broad range of engineering disciplines, including aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, environmental, geological, health and safety, industrial, materials science, mechanical, nuclear, petroleum, soil science, and solar engineering.
Data Interchange Standards Association
DISA serves as the Secretariat for ASC X12 and their X12 EDI and XML standards development process.
European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI)
IEEE Standards
Developed by the IEEE Standards Association.
International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
An international organization which provides global telecommunication standards. ITU-T Recommendations (standards), form the foundations of the information and communications technologies of today.
National Electrical Manufacturers Association
The trade association through which the electrical industry develops and promotes positions on standards and government regulations.
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
The NFPA advocates scientifically-based consensus codes and standards, research, and education for fire and related safety issues. NFPA offers free read-only access to their codes and standards.
National Information Standards Organization
Develops and promotes technical standards used in a wide variety of information services. NISO Standards are available for free on the NISO website.
National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST)
NIST's primary mission is to promote U.S. economic growth by working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements, and standards.
NSSN
Searches national and international standards.
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International
Publishes new, revised, and reaffirmed standards each year in three categories: Ground Vehicle Standards (J-Reports); Aerospace Standards; and Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS).
